Outdoor Things to Do Around Raleigh: Sunsets, Lakes and Trails Locals Love

I love that Raleigh is big enough to give you city life and trails with views at the same time. You can step away from the noise without leaving town.

One of the best parts of living in the Raleigh area is how many outdoor spots are 20 to 30 minutes away. Years after relocating from Pennsylvania, I'm still finding new trails, open fields and skyline views. This is my short list for when you need air, space and a reset.

Best Sunset Spots Around Raleigh

  • Dorothea Dix Park — The most reliable skyline sunset in Raleigh. The Big Field faces west, and the sky opens up wide.

  • Historic Yates Mill County Park — That classic North Carolina scene, with the historic mill reflected in the water.

  • Bond Park, Cary — Underrated. Walk toward the boathouse for the cleanest view over the lake.

  • Occoneechee Mountain, Hillsborough — For a true overlook. At 867 feet, it's the highest point in Orange County, with views over the Eno River and nearly three miles of trails.

Tip: arrive about 30 minutes before sunset. The best color usually shows up just after the sun dips below the horizon.

Where to Get on the Water Near Raleigh

One thing the Triangle does really well is water: lakes, rivers and quiet shoreline where you can actually get out on the water instead of just looking at it.

  • Lake Johnson Park, Raleigh — One of the easiest places in the city to get on the water. You can rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboards, and the park connects to the Capital Area Greenway. It's closed on Mondays in the cooler months, so check before you go.

  • Blue Jay Point County Park — A quieter Falls Lake access point, great if you already own a kayak.

  • Falls Lake — One of the biggest outdoor playgrounds in the Triangle, for boating, fishing and swimming beaches.

  • Jordan Lake — Perfect for boating, beaches and full lake days.

Trails and Greenways Around the Triangle

Some trails are paved and perfect for a stroller or an evening walk. Some are quiet forest trails. Some have real elevation if you want a workout.

  • Capital Area Greenway, Raleigh — Raleigh's citywide greenway network, with paved trails that link parks across the city.

  • Neuse River Trail — A long, paved greenway that runs from Falls Lake Dam toward the Johnston County line. It's great for long runs and bike rides.

  • William B. Umstead State Park — Forest trails between Raleigh and Cary, close to RDU.

  • Eno River State Park, Durham — Rocky river trails with more of a hiking feel.

  • Clayton River Walk on the Neuse — A 4-mile paved trail along the river in Clayton. It doesn't loop, so plan your turnaround.

Quieter Green Spaces for Photos and Slow Sundays

When someone asks me where to take family photos, have a picnic or just clear their head, I send them here:

  • JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State

  • Haywood Hall House and Gardens downtown

  • Dorothea Dix Park again, because there's always room on the Big Field
