Moving to Raleigh, NC
A practical, local guide to moving to Raleigh and the surrounding areas, written by someone who's done it herself.
Getting to know Raleigh and the surrounding areas
Raleigh and the surrounding areas include Durham and Chapel Hill, each home to a major university: NC State in Raleigh, Duke in Durham, and UNC-Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill. Major research and technology employers are located throughout the region.
Around them is a ring of towns that many people move to: Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, Clayton and more. Raleigh is the state capital and the seat of Wake County. Clayton, to the southeast, is in Johnston County.
When someone says they're "moving to Raleigh", they often end up living in one of these towns. Choosing between them is usually the biggest decision of the move.
Why people look at Raleigh

Four real seasons, with the mountains and the coast each a few hours' drive away
Parks and greenways across the region, and a growing restaurant and arts scene
How to choose where to live
START WITH YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE
Where will you work? How often will you commute? What do you want nearby? We’ll start with your daily routines and priorities to narrow your search. As you explore, test your commute during the hours you’d actually travel.
THINK BEYOND THE HOUSE
A home can check every box, but the location needs to work for you, too. Consider what you’d enjoy: sidewalks to a coffee shop, an established neighborhood with mature trees, community amenities, or more space and privacy.
BUILD YOUR SEARCH AROUND A COMFORTABLE BUDGET
What you qualify for and what you’re comfortable spending may be different. With your lender’s guidance, we’ll consider your monthly payment, property taxes, insurance, and any HOA dues alongside the purchase price.
EXPLORE SCHOOLS WITH THE RIGHT RESOURCES
If schools are part of your decision, I’ll connect you with district assignment tools and school information to support your research. Verify assignments for each specific address directly with the district, and consider programs, calendars, and transportation alongside your household’s needs.
PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER
You don’t need to have your ideal location figured out before we talk. During our consultation, we’ll work through your priorities and tradeoffs together, then build a focused search around what matters most to you.

Planning a long-distance move
START WITH A PLAN
We’ll map out your timing, budget, and priorities. If you need to sell, I can connect you with a trusted agent in your current market to help coordinate both transactions.
GET PREAPPROVED
I can connect you with a local lender who knows the market to help you get preapproved and understand your budget before we tour homes.
MAKE YOUR VISIT COUNT
We’ll narrow your search before you arrive so you can focus on homes, explore neighborhoods, and get a feel for everyday life.
PREPARE & SETTLE IN
My team and I will track transaction details and share resources for movers, temporary housing, and utilities to help you prepare for your move.
Buying from out of state
I’ve helped buyers purchase a home without ever seeing it in person, completing the process virtually, including signing remotely.
We’ll start with a Zoom consultation and build a plan around your circumstances. Whether you visit or rely on video tours, we’ll keep your search focused on your priorities.
Once you’re under contract, my team and I will coordinate inspections, track deadlines, and work with your lender and closing attorney to keep everything moving.
