Living in Clayton, NC: A Local’s Guide to Where We Actually Go

Clayton isn't "up and coming." It's already here.

When people tell me they're relocating to the Raleigh area, most of them picture Raleigh proper, Cary or Apex. Clayton often isn't on the list at all, and I understand why. From the outside it can look like a quiet town off US-70. Then you spend a Saturday here.

This is my personal Clayton list: the coffee shops, restaurants and quiet corners my husband and I actually go to, and the places I bring clients when they're getting a feel for the town.

Where Clayton Is (and How Far From Raleigh)

Clayton sits in Johnston County, southeast of Raleigh, along the Neuse River. Depending on traffic and where in town you start, my drive to downtown Raleigh usually runs 25 to 30 minutes, and some parts of Clayton get there faster.

That's what makes it worth a look. You can work in Raleigh, see friends in Raleigh and still come home to a town with its own downtown, its own restaurants and a slower pace. If Raleigh feels a little too fast for you, Clayton might be the fit.

Clayton Coffee Shops for Working, Meeting and Slow Mornings

You don't have to be in Raleigh for good coffee or a place to open your laptop. These are the shops I keep going back to:

  • Pure Green — My reset spot. It's bright and airy, with natural light and a swing chair by the window. I order the protein açaí bowl every time. If sugary drinks aren't your thing, the fresh-pressed juices are a good alternative.

  • 9 Bar Coffeehouse

  • White Rabbit Coffee & Wellness

  • Boba Beans Bistro

  • Boulevard West

  • Clayton Bakery

If you work from home, plan on rotating through a few of these. A change of scenery helps more than you'd think when you're new and don't have a routine yet.

Where to Eat in Clayton

This is the part nobody tells you about when you're comparing towns on a map: the lifestyle layer. Here's where we eat.

  • Romeo's Pizza — Chicago-style deep dish. Somehow it's even better cold the next day.

  • Jones Café — A classic diner where you feel like you stepped into the 1960s. Come for the burgers.

  • Burney's — The croissants melt in your mouth and never survive the drive home.

  • Crab Seafood House — Next to Walmart on 70. Messy, worth-it seafood. The crawfish seasoning is bold, and the shrimp has always been fresh when we've gone.

  • Fiori's — Our dim-lit Italian date night. We've tried several pasta dishes and haven't been disappointed once.

  • Lil Hombre — Criminally underrated. I'll say it: the best smoked tacos in town.

  • Mezcalito — The presentation is a 10 out of 10. Chips are unlimited, and the holiday decor goes all out in the best way.

Date Night and Drinks in Downtown Clayton

If you don't love the typical bar scene but still want somewhere a little elevated, go to Church Spirits & Cocktails in downtown Clayton.

It has a modern industrial feel: high ceilings, exposed brick, garage doors, concrete floors and candles on every table. When my husband wants an old fashioned, this is where we end up. We bring a deck of cards and play rummy. I usually order a Moscow mule, unless something on the seasonal menu pulls me in. The bartenders are lovely.

Getting Outside: The Clayton River Walk on the Neuse

The Clayton River Walk on the Neuse is a 4-mile paved trail along the river. It's part of North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail and the East Coast Greenway, so you can keep going north toward Raleigh if you're ambitious. The town trailhead and parking are at 2686 Covered Bridge Road.

One tip: the trail doesn't loop. Whatever distance you walk out, you're walking back, so plan accordingly.

Is Clayton a Good Fit for You?

Clayton tends to suit people who want:

  • A real downtown with local restaurants and shops

  • More space and a slower pace than inside Raleigh

  • Easy access to Raleigh for work or weekends

  • Greenways and river access close to home

It's worth comparing with other Triangle towns before you decide, especially if your commute matters. My Explore the Triangle guides walk through the differences.
