We moved to the Raleigh area in 2022. And honestly? I'm only just starting to feel settled.
When my husband was accepted to Campbell University's medical program, our whole life changed, and quickly. We said "see you soon" to family and our closest friends in Pennsylvania. I closed the door on a business I loved. Since then, we've lived in four counties in four years.
I help people relocate to the Triangle for a living now, and the thing I most want them to know is this: loving where you live and feeling settled there happen at very different times.
The First Months: Everything Is New
When we first moved to the Raleigh suburbs, everything was new. Even going out for coffee felt like a chance to explore. We'd drive around on purpose, get a little lost and see what we found.
I didn't have a routine yet, or my go-to spots. I didn't know any shortcuts, and I used my GPS for everything. I explored the only way I knew how: slowly. It was fun and exciting, and it was also hard.
Creating a new normal was something I'd looked forward to for so long. When it finally came, I realized there were a few things I hadn't thought through.
The Part Nobody Mentions: Finding Your People
Leaving Pennsylvania meant saying goodbye to friendships that had been part of my everyday life. Starting over in a new city as an adult was exciting, and it was a little lonely too.
Building community as an adult is not for the weak. Nobody hands you a friend group with your new keys.
So less than six months after we moved, I started what's now the Raleigh Network Room. It began as a small Facebook group for women in business, because I needed it myself. I wanted a place where real friendships could form naturally. In 2024 alone, I hosted 11 or 12 events. Some of the people I met there are now people I can't imagine life here without.
What Actually Helped Me Feel at Home in Raleigh
Everyone's timeline is different, but these are the things that made the biggest difference for me.
Explore without an agenda. Pick a coffee shop in a town you haven't been to yet and drive there. Some of the neighborhoods we loved most, we found by accident.
Start a "places to try" list. I saved local spots on Instagram into a folder and worked through it. It turned "what should we do?" into a plan.
Build a few routines early. A regular coffee shop, a regular trail, a regular Saturday market. Familiar faces add up.
Say yes to events, even alone. The women who walk into an event by themselves are some of the bravest people I know. That's often where friendships start.
If the community you want doesn't exist, start it. That's how the Network Room began.
Give it time. Moving four times in four years taught me that feeling settled can't be rushed. It shows up quietly, one ordinary day at a time.
When Raleigh Started to Feel Like Home
The more we explored, the more we loved it here. We started finding places we wanted to go back to, and neighborhoods we could picture ourselves living in.
Somewhere in these last few years, the Raleigh suburbs became the place we wanted to put down roots. Now I'm finally feeling that sense of being home. It's amazing how different your life can look in just a few years.
Why This Shapes How I Help Relocating Clients
Uprooting your life is hard. Planting new roots is hard. Building the life you've always wanted is worth every second of it.
Because I've lived it, I don't just help clients find a house. I help them think through the life around it: where they'll get coffee, how they'll meet people, which area actually fits their week.
